The KidsKnits Abbreviations List

This is a list of knitting abbreviation conventions.  There are no absolute standards.  Although in our extensive research,  we encountered (surprisingly) only one case of an abbreviation with 2 interpretations - (m, see below), that does not necessarily mean that the author of your pattern follows these conventions!

dp   double pointed
dpn   double pointed needle(s)
foll   follow, following
g   gram
gr   gram

g st   garter stitch

kn   knitting needle
k2tog   knit 2 stitches together
k wise   knitwise (as if to knit)
lh   left hand
lp   loop
m   usually meter, sometimes marker
mc   main color
m1   make one stitch
mm   millimeter
ms   moss stitch
oz   ounces
p   purl
pat   pattern
patt   pattern
pm   place marker
psso   pass the slipped stitch(es) over
p wise   purlwise (as if to purl)
p2ss   pass 2 slipped stitches over together
p2tog   purl 2 stitches together

rs   right (front) side of work
rsf   with right (front) side of work facing you

sl st   slip stitch
sl1   slip 1 stitch purlwise 
skp   slip 1 stitch purlwise, knit 1 stitch, pass the slipped stitch over
skpo   slip 1 stitch purlwise, knit 1 stitch, pass the slipped stitch over (same as skp)
sp   space
ssk   slip 2 stitches individually knitwise, then knit the 2 slipped stitches together
ssp   slip 2 stitches purlwise, then knit the 2 slipped stitches together
st st   stockinette stitch 
st, sts   stitch, stitches
str   straight
tbl   through the back of the loop
tog   together
trc   triple crochet

wsf   with the wrong side (back) of work facing you
wsr   wrong side (back) row

yon   yarn over needle - wrap yarn over top of needle (same as yo)
